The Royal Fortress of Chinon was at the centre of the continental possessions of King Henry II Plantagenet of England, who in 1154 became master of an empire stretching from Scotland to the Pyrenees.

Abandoned by his children who he was unable to associate with his power, ill and fleeing from Philip Augustus, Henry II Plantagenet died in the royal fortress of Chinon in 1189.
