The Royal Fortress of Chinon was at the centre of the continental possessions of King Henry II Plantagenet of England, who in 1154 became master of an empire stretching from Scotland to the Pyrenees.
He stored part of the royal treasure there. He stayed there frequently between 1160 and 1180. His great achievement in Chinon was the construction of the palace of fort Saint-Georges. Located to the east of the old fortress, it was more convenient to house an increasingly large administration.
