The Dog Tower
The Dog Tower is a defensive tower in the shape of a horseshoe. It was built by Philip Augustus as part of the reconstruction of the north side, which was heavily damaged during the siege of 1205.
It has three semi-buried levels equipped with arrow slits and a summit terrace which was connected to the parapet walk. The Dog Tower owes its name to the nearby kennel that housed the royal packs in the 15th century. Its bread oven, located on the 1st floor, was supplemented in the 15th century by a second oven that leaned against the tower to the west. This ensemble formed a bakery intended to feed the court of Charles VII and Marie of Anjou.
