Bombards and veuglaires

Two bombards and two veuglaires are presented in the park of the Fortress. These stubby guns are made of wrought iron. They are characteristic of the beginnings of gunpowder artillery in the 15th century.

Restored, they are presented in spectacular reconstituted wooden gun carriages, which protected the gunners from the attackers. The larger of the two bombards is named after a companion of Joan of Arc, La Hire. Only the princely or exceptionally large bombards were given a name.

The veuglaires (small cannons) exhibited in the park are also authentic wrought iron artillery pieces from the 14th and 15th centuries that have been restored. These small calibre pieces are presented on two different undercarriages that allowed them to easily follow an army on the move. These wooden supports were reconstituted from old iconographic documents.
