2:30-3:30 pm: Conference The Plantagenets and their court by Amaury Chauou
Richard the invincible, the vile Prince John, the beautiful Eleanor in the Middle Ages, from the borders of Scotland to the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem, the name of the Plantagenets resounds throughout the West. How did the Plantagenets, from the modest lineage of the Counts of Anjou, achieve such fame? For more than half a century, until 1216, their "empire", made up of territories as diverse as they were immense, was at the heart of the political, military and religious confrontations of their time. The main point, however, is that the Plantagenets associated their name with a mode of governance and a courtly style that would make history. Their saga, which inspired so many chroniclers and troubadours, still fascinates today.
Doctor in medieval history, Amaury Chauou is a teacher in literary preparatory classes (lycée Chateaubriand, Rennes). He is also an associate member of the Tempora laboratory and a lecturer at the universities of Rennes 2 and Bretagne-Occidentale. His publications include The Plantagenet Ideology(PUR, 2001) and King Arthur (Seuil, 2009).
The conference will be followed by a signing session
From 16h to 17h in addition to the conference, the Royal Fortress of Chinon offers:
- A guided tour of Eleanor's room reconstituted in the royal dwellings (30 mn). Realistic evocation of the private world of Eleanor of Aquitaine in Chinon, this reconstitution of the royal bedroom was made between 2018 and 2021. In the absence of furniture from this period preserved in our museums, the project required a preliminary study of archaeological, iconographic and textual sources, in order to propose plausible furniture models for the end of the 12th century, and appropriate to the royal status of the palace of Chinon. The manufacture of the furniture and textile trimmings was then entrusted to renowned craftsmen / living heritage companies.
- An immobile journey to the time of Eleanor (20 mn): let yourself be guided for an immersive relaxation session that will have you travel in your imagination of the Middle Ages.
