France, Limousin atelier, circa 1220 - 1235

This crosier was found under the abbey’s paving, in a tomb. There is a scene from the coronation of the Virgin in the volute of the crook; a scroll connects the bottom of the volute to the rod. The socket is decorated with two back-to-back appliqué figures: the Virgin and the Angel Gabriel (Annunciation). A knot with two friezes of dragons and a ruff of stylized leaves complete the ensemble.
